Negative Effects of Dysfunctional Breathing

Many of us harbour less-than-ideal breathing patterns due to structural issues, lifelong health concerns, or the weight of accumulated stress.

Dysfunctional breathing can manifest in various ways, such as:

  • Mouth breathing
  • Shallow upper chest breathing
  • Chronic hyperventilation
  • Sleep-disordered breathing
  • Vocal cord dysfunction
  • Unexplained breathing discomfort (dyspnea)

When your breathing goes awry, it can wreak havoc on your health and perpetuate breathing difficulties and discomfort. Dysfunctional breathing can complicate the treatment of numerous health issues, including:

  • Asthma
  • COPD
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Voice problems
  • Sleep-disordered breathing (including obstructive sleep apnea and upper airway resistance syndrome)
  • Long COVID
  • ME/CFS
  • Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome
  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Functional gut disorders
  • TMJ pain

The Benefits of this Program covers so much!

This program is a comprehensive 6 week program that provides a structured and individualised approach to optimising breathing.

Breathing assessment

The initial assessment

You will complete an initial comprehensive Breathing Assessment form. You may also need a personal appointment if your condition is more complex. This takes about an hour including lung function, hyperventilation and breathing pattern evaluation, health history to evaluate symptoms and causes of breathing issues, and costs AU$210.

We record baseline measures so that your progress can be monitored.

Dr Courtney can then advise if this program is likely to be helpful and/or refer for other treatment or to other health professionals if necessary.

The follow-up assessment

After the 6 sessions it is recommended that you are re-assessed to evaluate progress and advised if any other treatment is needed.
